Heaven was about a half-second away from losing her shit. Alicia could hear her cussing in her head. The kitchen was proving to be unhelpful, with only a stack of mismatched plates and a few grubby-looking glasses in the cupboard. There was some plastic cutlery in the top drawer along with condiment packets, and she pocketed all the salt she could find. But no olive oil. There wasn’t even a frying pan or a pot in sight.

She thought about asking a student to go to the dining hall, but finding someone willing to help her would take too long. Galleria, the closest supermarket, was at least ten minutes away, and they needed every second of the six and half hours they had until sunset.

Heaven pushed the urge to scream back down her throat and opened the fridge—a last-ditch effort—revealing shelves packed with takeout and Tupperware, bottles of Dasani, expired milk. On the middle shelf there was a clamshell container inside a clear bag with “Bowl Bros: The Freshest Salad in the 6ix” typed on it. On top of the container, she saw two sauce cups filled with viscous yellow liquid.

“You’ve got to be shitting me.”

Her phone vibrated with a text from Oni: “Get Saran wrap too.”
